Hear Who God Says We Are

When I was younger as an atheist, I saw myself as an ugly duckling through the tainted lens I viewed myself. I refused to go to one particular physical education class during my first year of college. In that class, everyone must wear a swimsuit. I did not even own a swimsuit and never wanted to show that much skin to others. Perhaps I was afraid of the water or ashamed of my body, but I preferred to take the penalty for missing that class than showing myself in a swimsuit.
Fast forwards, I have been a follower of Christ for 30 years now. I no longer view myself as being ugly but fearfully and wonderfully made. I have gone through some journeys. My husband and I often share what we hear from God. He always hears: You are my beloved. I am pleased with you. On the other hand, I did not hear anything for a long time. As I grow, I hear God saying who I am more and more: You are precious, you are loved, you are a trailblazer.
Every one of us can hear from God’s word on who we are: You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9).
Gideon saw himself as” I am the least in my father’s house.” God sees him as a “valiant warrior” (Judges 6:12). His view of himself became more and more aligned with how God saw him—a mighty man of valor—as he obeyed God’s voice. With an army of only three hundred men, Gideon defeated the multitudes of Midianites by blowing trumpets and shouting around the enemy’s camp. It was amazing (the Lens of Love).
I pray that we agree and receive God’s affirmation by faith. Let us who God says we are, awaken our spirit and courage to do great things, just like His words did to Gideon.
